Why does Nebraska have little 5G?

Wireless internet firms and Friesen agree that the slow deployment of small cell wireless in the state is due to the high fees cities charge to have small cell boxes installed on existing light poles, and slow approval processes.

While more than 20 states have passed legislation to remove barriers to 5G deployment, Nebraska has not and, as a result, could soon fall behind.

The 5G UC icon refers to T-Mobile's "Ultra Capacity" 5G network, which indicates that users are connected to either mid-band or millimeter wave (mmWave) 5G. It is more likely to be mid-band with T-Mobile as this makes up the bulk of the carrier's faster 5G network.

Will 4G phones stop working?

Within the U.S., it's reasonable to assume that by the end of 2022 there will not be a single major carrier supporting 2G. The same fate awaits 3G. 4G LTE operates under a different scenario, and we can confidently say that 4G will be around for at least another decade.

Eventually, in an estimated 15 to 20 years when there are few 4G LTE devices in use, most if not all of the spectrum will be used for 5G. Dynamic spectrum sharing lets carriers use the same spectrum band for both 4G and 5G.

Technically. So, why are some 5G connections so slow? The first, and most impactful, reason is that the far-reaching 5G signals that have powered the vast majority of carrier rollouts in the US – especially from AT&T and, to a lesser extent, T-Mobile – have used low-band carrier frequencies.

T-Mobile launched a 600Mhz, low-band, Extended Range 5G network in December of 2019. With new equipment, T-Mobile was also able to update its 4G LTE service on the same tower. AT&T and Verizon have also deployed low-band 5G networks with similar coverage capabilities. Of course, there's Sprint's 2.5GHz spectrum.

T-Mobile has faster 5G and more "premium" data than Verizon for a lower monthly cost. However, Verizon tends to have better coverage, especially in rural areas. You'll need a 5G phone to make the most of any of these plans.
