Chlamydia

This is a bacterial infection of the genital tract. It is also one of the hardest STDs to detect since the early stages have little to no symptoms. The symptoms of this disease do not begin to appear until a few weeks after the patient has been exposed, and given how mild they are, they are easy to overlook.

But a negative test doesn't always mean you don't have herpes, especially if you have symptoms. A blood test also may tell if you had a past herpes virus infection, but results aren't always reliable.

Certain STIs will show up on a test within a couple of weeks of infection, while others will take much longer. This means if you test too early for certain STIs, the infection might not show up. In other words, it's possible to have an STI even if you tested negative the first time.

If you test for an STD too early and the incubation period is not over yet, you may test negative for the disease even if you do have it. In addition, even after the incubation period has passed, there are some STDs that can take months or years to produce symptoms.

While there are many different tests that can detect STIs like gonorrhea or HIV, there is not one that is able to detect all STIs. Even certain "STI panels" may not include otherwise common STIs like herpes or HPV. There are certain groups who are at high risk of certain STIs and are advised to seek routine testing.
