H2O: Just Add Water is a 2023 American animated fantasy-drama film and a revival of the 2004 Australian television series of the same name, produced by DreamWorks Animation after acquiring the rights to the original series in 2018, and distributed by Universal Pictures. The film was released on July 25, 2023 and is animated in CGI, unlike its live-action counterpart.

Synopsis[]

After falling victim under a full moon one night on the treacherous Mako Island, three teenage girls undergo a magical metamorphosis. Now able to turn into mermaids upon touching the slightest bit of water, Cleo, Emma and Rikki must learn to master their newfound powers and keep their secret, as well as take down evil scientist Dr. Denman and stop her from exposing and destroying all mermaid life... for good.

Differences from the 2004 TV series[]

  • The film does not take place in Gold Coast, Australia, instead taking place in Florida, with almost all characters being changed from Australian to American.
  • The film is a condensed version of the first two seasons of the original show completely ignores the third season, with no characters or plot points from season three included, save for the comet in the finale.
  • All outdated early 2000s technology has been updated.
  • Charlotte is now Dr. Denman’s assistant, though her personality and arc in season two hasn't changed and serves as a sub-plot.
  • Kim is no longer a blonde with fair skin, her appearance changed in order to look more like her sister.
